London Area Strategic Support

The Public Law Project (PLP) is funded by Trust for London to provide public law strategic support to improve the lives of disadvantaged Londoners.
PLP can use this funding to engage with community groups and charities representing disadvantaged Londoners, and to tackle systemic maladministration affecting people in the London area.
Engaging with community groups
We would like to hear from community groups and grassroots organisations that would benefit from an increased understanding of how public law can help them. This is not just about using public law in litigation but passing on understanding of how public bodies should behave, what individuals and groups who work with public bodies can expect of them, and how to drive policy change once unfair or illegal practice has been identified.
We may be able to:
- Meet groups and advise them on specific legal issues
- Provide written advice on complaints, or campaign issues
- Help complaint to public bodies
- Advise on effective campaigning and lobbying
Tackling systemic maladministration
We will be particularly keen to assist in circumstances in which public bodies repeatedly fail in their duties or repeat the same mistakes to the detriment of disadvantaged groups.
We call this type of repeat failure ‘systemic maladministration’ and can work with advice agencies to tackle it in a systematic fashion. We may be able to:
- Advise on evidence gathering to prove the problem;
- Provide ‘on the job’ training engaged with practical issues;
- Produce letter templates, either to raise the effectiveness of complaints, or to act as sample ‘letters before claim’ to outline a case for judicial review.
